Fiddler Crabs
for Narrator, Violin Soloists and Orchestra

Fiddler Crabs is a children's story set to music. Written for narrator, soloists and chamber orchestra, this salty tale features abbreviated versions of Bach's Violin Concerto No.2 in E major as well as the Concerto for Two Violins in D minor.
The story concerns two young violinists, Franz and Blodgett. The boys are best friends and friendly rivals who find themselves suddenly competing to perform as soloist with the "Orchestra da Beach." Their close friendship is tested and ultimately guided by the conductor, Maestro Bafio, thus giving both crabby crabs a chance to shine and also a good lesson from life. Their sideways antics and fine fiddling are appreciated by children and adults alike.

Fiddler Crabs received its premiere performances in April and May of 2009. Six Family Concerts were presented by the Binghantom Community Orchestra and the Ithaca Community Orchestra under the direction of Cayenna Ponchione. With author Raya Lee as narrator, the soloists for the concerts were Brendan Ratchford and Doug Diegert from Binghamton, and Judy Hyman and Laurie Hart from Ithaca. The performances were co-sponsored by a grant from the Claudette Sorel Foundation.
