1812 Memorial
Battle of Lake Erie
As the United States and Canada observe the bicentennial of the War of 1812, the legacy of lasting peace will take center stage. The dramatic stories which ensued highlight "Old Ironsides" and the struggles for naval supremacy, the significance of the Niagara Campaign, the defeat of Tecumseh, the burning of Washington, D.C. and Dolly Madison’s heroism, the perseverance of the people of Baltimore and of Ft. McHenry, which inspired The Star-Spangled Banner, as well as the stunning victory at the Battle of New Orleans.
While there were no tangible gains to the adversaries, the US and Canada went on to expand and prosper. Indeed, the footprints of the conflict remain present in our daily lives. The War of 1812 is sometimes labeled “The Forgotten War”, but there is more to remember beyond the cliché.
